Our Essential Spring Cleaning Checklist
You’ve prepared the lawns and gardens, now it’s time to face the dreaded indoor ritual – spring cleaning! If, like many of us, you dread the annual deep-clean, read on for our top 3 cleaning-musts to get your home sparkling clean.
Fresh air, don’t care
One of the best parts about spring is the weather – the sun has finally come out of hiding, the temperature is on the rise and the rain is usually helpful rather than stormy. Our biggest tip when it comes to spring cleaning is to make sure you open up your home to get some fresh air. This is not only good for your health, but it will also add a sense of freshness to your home.
The important thing to remember when airing out your home is to do it during the cleaning process, not after. The last thing you want is to start banging dust particles into the air with nowhere to go. If you can, try to air out your house in one day – start at the front of the house opening windows and doors and do your dusting as you go. That way, the dust goes out while the fresh air comes in – win-win!
Time to declutter
If you’re anything like me, there’s something about spring that makes me feel like a fresh start. What better way to renew your home than to purge the clutter?! Too often we accumulate junk that we neither need nor use. Unless it’s something you’re keeping for sentimental reasons, if you’re not using it what’s the point?
In the words of Marie Kondo “discard everything that does not spark joy”. Use this time to really empty out your shelves, creating three piles – keep, store and throw. You can then organise your ‘keep’ pile back in its rightful place (make sure to keep it neat and practical!), store away unused items in relevant places, and donate any useable items to charity. Just remember that if it’s truly junk, a tip run might be your best bet.
Don’t forget the cobwebs
Going into many houses for a clean, the most common thing we find is owners and tenants neglecting walls and ceilings. It might seem unimportant, but dusting those pesky cobwebs in the ceiling cornice can make a world of difference! Oftentimes cobwebs go unnoticed, so planning to dust these away at least once a year at spring time will help keep you on top of them.
The other thing to remember is the amount of hidden dust that can accumulate throughout a house. As part of your spring cleaning routine, make sure to bang out (and if appropriate, wash) all the fabric furnishings in your home – think curtains, fabric couch cushions and backrests, throws and pillows, and even your rugs. Do this outside where possible so as to not bang out all the dust into your home – ‘better out than in, I always say’!
