How To Manage Spring Gardening

For garden lovers and horticulturalists alike, spring is such a wonderful time of year as you see your outdoor spaces blossom. But as the days grow longer and the weather warmer, if you don’t look after your outdoor spaces you’ll be left with dead grass and empty flower pots come blossoming time. If you want lawns and gardens worth talking about this spring, read on for our three top tips on how to look after your backyard this season.

Finish Weeding, Like, Yesterday

I once had a friend tell me she was keeping the flowering weeds in her garden because they were ‘pretty’. She really regretted this when the warm spring weather hit, and her garden was overrun by poppies and milk thistle. With spring upon us, it’s important to get all your weeding finished before everything takes off in the warmer weather.

If you’ve been cursing the chilly Goulburn climate, you might not have spent much time in your garden the past few weeks. The general rule of thumb is to do all your weeding and soil turn over after the last frost, but before the weather warms up. So basically, if you haven’t prepared your garden beds for spring, now’s the time! Pick one of the warmer days during the next week or two to pull out any unwanted weeds and spot-spray anything that needs the extra incentive not to grow back.

Time To Fertilise

One of the most common gardening mistakes is failing to fertilise. Fertilisation is an important step in your outdoor process to ensure both your lawn and garden thrive during growing season. For garden beds, make sure you turn your soil and add some nutrients by mixing in compost or manure. It’s also a good idea to purchase some good quality mulch to add to the top of your garden beds, particularly if you’re growing a veggie patch.

For lawn maintenance, now’s the perfect time to fertilise and also reseed any areas of your lawn that are looking patchy. We recommend the good old two-for-one ‘weed and feed’ or similar, to kill off unwanted weeds and help nourish your lawn at the same time. Just be sure to check the packet prior to purchasing as some varieties of treatment will kill off certain species of grass – you don’t want to kill that lawn that you’ve tried so hard to grow!

Pick Your Plants

The start of spring is a great time to plant fresh flowers in your newly prepared garden beds. Choose plants that are naturally in season such as petunias, pansies and marigold for the best results. If unsure, have a look at what’s growing well at the local nurseries, or even have a chat to one of the shop workers for their recommendations. September is prime planting time for lots of veggies too, so if you’re thinking about starting a veggie garden it’s a great time to do it.

Once you’re done planting, remember to regularly water your lawn and garden to help them grow. Lawns need a bit of TLC after winter, so if you want them looking lush and green by summer give them a quick water once a day (either early morning or evening) and increase to twice a day once the weather warms up at the end of Spring. Most gardens could do with a longer water every few days, but check recommendations for your particular plants so that you don’t under or over water your individual plants.

Spring is such a wonderful time to watch your garden grow, and could be the joy you need as we move towards the end of the year. If you need a hand getting your lawns and gardens in tip top shape, contact us today to discuss how we can help.
